It was the final episode of hit drama Our Girl last night, but fans of the show were left in floods of tears at the shock death of a very popular character.

After episode upon episode of Elvis Harte (Luke Pasqualino) trying to win back Corporal Georgie Lane (Michelle Keegan), fans were left delighted when the medic finally gave into his charms and accepted his proposal for the second time.

Despite Elvis previously standing his girl up on their wedding day, things seemed to be going well for the pair as they spent the night together. But the episode soon took a dramatic twist when they found themselves under attack from the enemy during their final mission in Kabul.

As the army truck was under fire, Elvis and the rest of Section 2 flew in as back up to help clear the building, but he found himself sitting on top of a pre-planted bomb which detonated, causing destruction.

As Elvis died in Georgie's arms, viewers of the show took to Twitter to express how upset they were feeling, with some questioning how producers could kill him off...

After the show ended and it was announced Our Girl would be returning in 2018, fans started to predict what could be next for Georgie.

Some even believed she could be pregnant with Elvis' baby after the pair spent the night together the day before he was killed.

We will all have to wait and see!

After some viewers said they would no longer be watching the show, Our Girl creator Tony Grounds told Radio Times the reason Luke was written out of the show.

He said, "Firstly in terms of honouring that story – it felt like their relationship was brilliant and toxic at the same time and it was a great dramatic way to go with it. Being in the forces, he's quite close to death all the time so that was the one thing that stuck in my mind.

"And then Luke had signed a contract to do another show which tied him up for five years with Snatch. So we had no choice.

"We could have sent Elvis to prison or on holiday or just not seen him for five years but that seemed a bit daft so we thought let's take this brave way – and he dies on the battlefield in Georgie Lane's arms. We were forced into that way of thinking because I love him and I would happily have had Elvis in forever."

Meanwhile actress Michelle Keegan, who plays the role of Georgie Lane, took to Twitter after the series finale to thank fans for their messages.

Sharing a photo of herself and Luke on set, Michelle wrote, 'Season 1 finished! Thankyou so much for all your lovely comments. Feel very lucky to be part of the show. #elvisandgeorgieforever'

Our Girl is set to return for a new series in 2018.
