When Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee came up with the idea of the hit TV show she probably didn't think it would win multiple awards, and get a mention in The Simpsons, but that's exactly what's just happened.

As Derry Girls nears its end, with a trailer for the third and final season dropping last week, a recent episode of The Simpsons featured an ice cream parlour called 'Dairy Girls Ice Cream'.

Posting a photo of the aptly named building, a fan account on Twitter wanted some clarification asking: 'Is Dairy Girls Ice Cream supposed to be a reference to Dairy Queen, or Derry Girls, or both?', to which Matt Selman, The Simpsons' Executive Producer, replied simply: 'Derry Girls'.

Matt's reply then caused show creator Lisa to retweet it exclaiming: 'I. Am dead', with her tweet now attracting more than 9,000 likes. Matt then replied a second time saying: 'It's the least we can do'.

Since its beginning four years ago, Derry Girls has become a very popular show around the world, and it seems that with a tribute in the long-running animated TV show, it just highlights its success even more.

The Channel 4 series will return later this year for its last season.

This Derry Girls reference comes just a day after an episode of The Simpsons featured the voice of The Weeknd, playing the role of an influencer called Orion Hughes. In a clip shared by the Canadian singer, Orion comes to apologise to Bart after he is humiliated trying to return some fake trainers.

Take a look back at some of the most hilarious quotes from Derry Girls:
