Corrie boss Iain Macleod confirms there'll be a DEATH over Christmas
They're going against tradition!
Soaps are notorious for never allowing their characters to have a happy ending - but that's what makes them so gripping to watch, right? And whilst there's nothing more shocking than a soap death, most soaps tend to steer clear of bumping people off at Christmas.
Coronation Street in particular have tried to veer away in the past from a death over the festive period... But new Corrie boss Iain Macleod has revealed that they'll be straying from tradition this year, confirming that there will indeed be a death at Christmas!
At a press event, Iain confirmed to publications that there'll be a death over the Christmas episodes, "On other soaps, it's relatively common but not necessarily on Coronation Street. Anything like that is a tough decision. Killing any character, regardless of whether it's Christmas or not, is a tough decision."
He added, "I'm always fully conscious that these aren't just characters – there's an actor and a human being that plays that part. Before you drop the guillotine on them, you do think long and hard about it, because it has serious real-world consequences for them.
"But ultimately I think actors understand that you want to tell the best story possible. The outcomes of the Christmas episode are the best ones in respect of storylines. We thought long and hard about it, but the stories justified the decision to go there."
Corrie bosses have also revealed what will be happening over Christmas... Here's a quick round-up of Coronation Street's Christmas storylines:
A Winter Wonderland attraction gets turned upside down when there's an armed siege - will everyone escape unharmed? There's a festive fairground in Weatherfield too, but it fails to deliver and spirits are dampened.
However, Michael Bailey doesn't want to let his family down, and steps up to make sure his neighbours have got a fun, snowy experience with stalls and rides.
Unfortunately, Derek Milligan is not feeling the goodwill to all men, and believes that Gary Windass has ruined his life. He takes drastic action to make him pay...
Derek finds an antique rifle in Gary's furniture shop inadvertently left by Fiz, and some of our favourite cobbles residents will find themselves in a very dangerous situation. After leaving the pub-goers petrified, Derek chases Gary onto the cobbles and they battle it out atop the Helter Skelter at the funfair - and there'll be fatal consequences.
Shona is hoping to make David's birthday extra special, organising a treasure hunt with herself as the prize - but when the clues lead the Platt family into Derek's drama, things begin to look very ropey.
Rita is sadly left on her own over Christmas as everyone thinks she's gone away for the festive period - so when a freak accident occurs, Rita is left vulnerable and in danger.
The factory is finally rebuilt, leading to celebrations among the staff - but Sarah and Nick are seriously unhappy when they discover who their new landlord is.
Of course, things were never going to work out for Robert and Michelle - so she packs up her life and books a one-way ticket away from the cobbles... But just before she departs, she realises that she's sold the Bistro to her arch enemy Ray Crosby.
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
