In heartbreaking scenes aired earlier this year, Coronation Street fans witnessed the tragic final moments of Aidan Connor, played by Shayne Ward, before he committed suicide. Now, two months later, it has been revealed that the character will be seen one final time on the popular TV soap.
In more emotional scenes, Aidan will be seen in a video message recorded in February, while he was in hospital to donate a kidney to his sister, Carla. In the video he opens up about his decision to donate his kidney, saying how much his family means to him.
Coronation Street has posted details on their official website, Preview Pictures: Coming Up On The Cobbles, including stills from the show with the captions, 'Alya is given a DVD of an interview Aidan did with a student about kidney donation. When she watches it she realises how much his family meant to him. Will this change her mind?'
Back in May, viewers saw the moments when Aidan Connor broke down and prepared to take his own life. After the episode aired, former X Factor winner Shayne Ward received a lot of praise from fans for his portrayal, with many adding he should win 'every award'. Not long after, his fiancée, former Hollyoaks star Sophie Austin, also praised her husband-to-be.
Taking to Instagram to post a picture of Shayne on the Coronation Street cobbles with their daughter, Sophie wrote, 'So here we are at the end of this long journey , one that I'm so so proud of you for taking . At first it was such a hard decision and road to face knowing how important this story was for us as a family and for so many others. You were scared as you wanted to do it justice ! Well you did my darling , you listened to stories/ experiences , learnt , revisited your own memories and tragic loss and worked hard to make this story the truest it could be and to hopefully help others and get people taking . I will forever be in awe of you and your amazing talent as an actor .Thankyou my love xx @shaynetward @samaritanscharity @calmzone.' sic
Just days after the harrowing episode aired, Shayne revealed that he has also lost a relative to suicide. He explained that since the episode aired, he has received messages from people who were planning to take their own lives. He went on to say that many people who were considering suicide have now called the appropriate charities to get help.
