The band formed in 2001

The Script
Author: Emma DoddsPublished 15th Aug 2024

The Script is an Irish rock band, formed in 2001 with original members vocalist Danny O'Donoghue, guitarist Mark Sheehan and drummer Glen Power. After releasing their self-titled debut album in 2008, the group shot to fame with hits like 'The Man Who Can't Be Moved', 'Breakeven' and 'Hall of Fame'.

Back in April 2023, the band announced the devastating news that Mark had passed away paying tribute to him in a statement which read: 'Much loved husband, father, brother, band mate and friend Mark Sheehan passed away today in hospital after a brief illness. The family and group ask fans to respect their privacy at this tragic time.'

Later in the year, the band took to the stage at American Express presents BST Hyde Park, where they paid tribute to their late band member.

This year, they announced their world tour called 'Satellites', along with a new album also called 'Satellites', which is out now.

Here we've gathered together nine interesting facts you might not have known about The Script, from the origins of their band name to details of that £22k round of drinks.

Check out these facts about The Script:

1) Danny O’Donoghue and Mark Sheehan had been best friends since they were 12

They used to be in boyband Mytown together, put together by none other than Louis Walsh!

2) Danny and Mark produced songs by Britney Spears, Boyz II Men and TLC

They lived in Los Angeles together, and had a call from Danny's future co-star on The Voice will.i.am, who requested a song for Britney's 2013 album 'Britney Jean' - and they co-wrote 'Now That I Found You'!

3) 'If You Could See Me Now' was written in memory of Danny's late father

Danny's dad Shay sadly passed away on Valentine's Day in 2008, six months before the band's hugely successful self-titled debut album. He has a rose tattoo in memory of him.

4) The band name was inspired by the time they spent living in LA

Apparently, everyone was always talking about film scripts, and the pair would often joke and say: "What's the script?" instead of: "What's up?"

5) Danny apparently shared his pay from The Voice with his bandmates

Danny was a judge on The Voice for the first two series of the show in 2012 and 2013.

6) When he was 17, Danny accidentally spilled wine over The Edge

That's the U2 guitarist, by the way. U2's manager also managed Danny, and the groups spent time together one evening - during which Danny got rather inebriated and fell down a flight of stairs in front of Bono!

7) They once spent a whopping £22k round on drinks for 8,000 people

They told us all about it in November 2019. Mark explained: "Last year when we did the Freedom Charter we bought the biggest round of drinks in history," he explained, as his bandmate Danny added: "Yes, 8,000 drinks - do you know how much the bar bill was? £22,000. Imagine me waking up the next morning and checking my wallet, I was like, 'Oh no'."

8) All of their studio albums have been to Number 1 in Ireland

That's 'The Script' (2008), 'Science & Faith' (2010), '#3' (2012), 'No Sound Without Silence' (2014), 'Freedom Child' (2017) and 'Sunsets & Full Moons' (2019).

9) The Man Who Can’t Be Moved spent over a year in the UK charts

63 weeks, to be exact!

Did The Script break up?

No, The Script didn't break up. However, they did go on a hiatus after their 'No Sound Without Silence Tour' in January 2015, with Danny confirming they needed time off to 'chill' and Danny had to have throat surgery.

Like many other artists, The Script had to break from touring due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, with Danny later revealing he forgot the lyrics to one of their songs in an interview backstage at Hits Live Liverpool.

Danny said: "The first few gigs coming back though, after COVID were crazy. I was writing lyrics on my hands and everything!

"It's not the first verse," he continued: "It's the second verse. It's the cheeky second verse. If you see me put the mic out like this, it means I totally forgot my part."

Are The Script going on tour?

The band, with their new line-up of Danny, Glen and new members Ben Sargeant and Ben Weaver, will be taking their 'Satellites' tour on the road in November 2024.
