Throughout September 2023, 'Dance The Night' singer Dua Lipa teased fans with a new look and wiped her Instagram. Then, in October, she revealed it was all in preparation for her new song 'Houdini', which she released along with the music video in November 2023 - and you can hear it on MFR.
Dua's song and video dropped late at night on Thursday 9th November, attracting millions of views in its first few days.
Taking to Instagram to share the release of her new song, Dua wrote: '⛓️HOUDINI! OUT! NOW! EVERYWHERE! So it begins... thank you for your patience. The first release from my upcoming album🫀 feeling so filled with love and joy to get to do this with "the band" (@tameimpala @dannylharle @carolineailin @tobiasjessojr) and to share this moment with the world.
'Thank you to the absolute dream team who made this video with me 🔐❤️ bruises sweat n tears!! worth every moment!!! I hope you love it as much as we've loved making this for you'. (sic)
In response to Dua's post, fans have been taking to the comments to write messages such as: 'She has come to save pop once again', and 'You’re literally addicted to releasing smashes.' Kim Petras also wrote: 'slaps 🩸'.
'Houdini' music video
Just a few hours after it premiered, Dua's music video for 'Houdini' saw more than 5 million views on YouTube. The video sees Dua dancing in a studio by herself, but when she looks in the mirror, the studio is full of dancers, dancing with her.
Again, fans took to the comments to leave excited messages. One wrote: 'Listening on repeat! Well done Dua', with another saying: 'I’ve always loved Dua since “Be the One” and it’s cool to see her evolve and change music styles and dance more.' (sic)
Where did it come in the charts?
The song debuted at Number 2, just being pipped to the post by 'Lovin On Me' by Jack Harlow. The single was, however, certified Platinum by the BPI in July 2024 - translating to a whopping 600,000 sales in the UK alone!
What has Dua said about 'Houdini'?
Speaking to us, Dua also told us about her new song, she said: "I just love to play on words I loved... Houdini is an escape artist. And I think you know, for me at least, like the underlying story with it is like knowing your worth, knowing what you deserve, knowing when to stay and knowing when to Houdini.
"It definitely is difficult to have that strength (to leave). You have to just like have the confidence in being like this doesn't feel good for me. You have to go with your gut instinct you have to follow. "
How did Dua Lipa announce her new single?
Dua took to her socials back on 1st November, to share the artwork which is her licking a mirror, with the song's name written in bold yellow writing. She simply captioned the pic: 'HOUDINI ⛓️NOV 9TH 11PM GMT PRE ORDER IN BIO'.
At the time of the announcement, fans of the singer took to the comments to share their excitement at the follow-up to 'Dance The Night', which was featured in the Barbie movie.
'Bam Bam' singer Camila Cabello wrote: 'hot', while a fan wrote: 'YES !!!READY FOR IT❤️'. Another commented: 'WE ARE READY FOR HOUDINI ⛓🔓🔑'.
This announcement followed Dua Lipa's previous post where she revealed a new look, which has since been deleted from Instagram.
Just three days before, Dua teased fans with a short video where she showed off a new look with red hair, posing with a key on her tongue. The video ends with a series of white numbers on a black screen.
