It really does run in the family
Last updated 8th Dec 2021
Musicians passing their talents down to future generations has been rife since the beginning of time. Being the offspring of famous people has its downsides, but it can be especially impactful for your future career. It gives a whole new meaning to that phrase, 'it's who you know.'
Imagine Jay Z and Beyonce being your parents and being surrounded by music 24/7? It’s no surprise that children of musical icons often go on to have incredible music careers of their own.
Here we take a look at who followed in the musical footsteps of their famous parents…
Check out these celebrities whose children grew up to be music stars:
Billy Ray Cyrus and Miley Cyrus
With country legend Billy Ray Cyrus as your father and Dolly Parton as your godmother it's no surprise that Miley chose pop stardom as her career path. Miley also has some musical siblings as her half-brother Trace's band Metro Station had a hit with 'Shake It', brother Braison is a folk singer and sister and pop singer Noah has also had chart-topping hits.
Will Smith and Willow Smith
Willow Smith has definitely inherited her parent's talent for singing, songwriting and acting. She's a triple threat. She made her acting debut alongside her dad in I Am Legend in 2007 and later became an internet star when she dropped her first single 'I Whip My Hair' and signed to Jay Z's music label Roc Nation.
In 2021, Willow announced her fourth studio album, 'Lately I Feel Everything', featuring guest artists that included Tierra Whack and Avril Lavigne.
Will Smith and Jaden Smith
Will's son Jaden, who is only 23, has made a name for himself in the world of acting and rap. He's starred in 'The Karate Kid' and Netflix original 'The Get Down' and dropped his third album 'CTV3: Cool Tape Vol. 3' in 2020.
And who can forget back in 2010 when Jaden featured on Justin Bieber's hit track 'Never Say Never'?!
Julio Iglesias and Enrique Iglesias
Julio Iglesias is considered one of the most famous people in Spain and is a singer, songwriter and former professional footballer. Over his career, he has sold more than 100 million records in 14 languages. His son, Enrique Iglesias truly followed in his father's footsteps since 1995. In 2021, Enrique released his last studio album 'Final'.
Beyonce, Jay Z and Blue Ivy
Blue Ivy entered the music charts before she was even born. Yep, Jay Z's song 'Glory' features Blue Ivy's first heartbeat and includes a sample of her crying. The song was released just two days after she was born.
In 2019, Blue collaborated with her mum, Beyonce, on 'Brown Skin Girl' and won Best Music Video at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards.
We can't wait to see what she does next!
Billie Eilish and brother Finneas
Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas have a very special bond, and have worked together as a singing/songwriting duo since they were tiny.
However, they could have their parents to thank for their talents, as Billie and Finneas' mum Billie is an actress and screenwriter and their dad Patrick also started out as an actor.
However, things weren't 'easy' for the family growing up, as they both took on other jobs on the side of acting to support their family, Patrick working as a construction worker and Maggie getting a job as a teacher.
Mabel and Neneh Cherry
Singer Mabel's parents are very well known in the music industry, which is probably where she got a lot of her music inspo from! Her mum is 80s music icon Neneh Cherry, and father Massive Attack producer Cameron McVey. It's not just her parents who are musical either, her mum's half-brother is 90s musician Eagle-Eye Cherry!
