We were chatting to him about his new movie Detroit

John Boyega was catapulted to fame when he was cast as Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but it seems his family aren't that fussed.

We were chatting to him about his new film 'Detroit', which is based on the true story of the murder of three black men during the 1967 Detroit riots.

Police and the National Guard attended The Algiers Motel after reports there was a sniper in the building.

Also there was Melvin Dismukes, who John plays. He was was a private security guard and in the film we see him try to play peacemaker between the police and the mostly black guests at the motel.

He ended up going on trial with the police officers he tried to control, but was found not guilty.

Melvin Dismukes helped with the film - spending time on set with John, who told us "You get a chance to meet the actual person, gain perspective and you're allowed to take away some emotional clues as to how you should play certain scenes".

John chose not to question Melvin on the details of the night telling us 'I just wanted to get to know him as a person, separate from his past."

We also spoke about Star Wars, and that's where John said his family aren't that fussed and are just glad he's working:

"No one really cares, they care that I'm in it, they're glory hunters my family...it's not really that deep to them."

We also spoke to John's co-star Will Poulter, who plays one of the police officers.

He told us it was incredibly challenging getting into the mindset of a racist cop, but hopes that it raises awareness that there are people in positions of power that share similar views.

Will, who's also known for his comedic turns in films like 'We're the Millers', told us he wants to use his platform to do more than just entertain, although he jokes he will post pictures of his trainers.

"I’m well aware I’m not saving lives, but what I can do is contribute to stories that have the potential for social and political change and genuine political impact…there’s nothing wrong with just solely entertaining people…but if I can be in a number of films that are socially impactful, then I’ll be very happy."

While the film is picking up awards buzz there is also talk Will may pick up a nominations for performance. He was pretty bashful about it, saying it's just a bonus but the message of the movie is much bigger than that.
