On April 21st I popped to Lossiemouth to visit a lovely lady called Mary Kinnaird. Why? Well for a cuppa tea and piece of cake of course!
Mary and her friends had been busy all week home baking and organising an event in Marys own home called 'At Home with Mary'. Throughout the day anyone could pop in, have a blether and eat a cake (or 3) all to help raise some money for Dr Gray's in Elgin.
For the past 14 years Mary has been a patient at Dr Gray’s Hospital in the Renal Unit to receive dialysis treatment – and this was her was of paying back just some of the outstanding dedication she has received from staff at the Moray unit.
The Dr Gray’s unit is regarded as a ‘satellite’ from the main unit for north east patients at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and can provide dialysis treatment to eight patients at a time as well as providing two consultant clinics each month.
“I decided to do something for the unit when I noted that last month was Kidney Awareness Month, while I always try to educate people about kidney disease, I thought that if I had one event this would perhaps give more focus to the cause.”
Mary had various different things going on in her home and garden from raffles to guess the fairy’s birthday and not to mention her house was covered with all different kind of cakes! It was obvious that lots of work had been put into the day as she opened her doors between the hours of 10am and 4pm.
At the end of the day Mary had raised well over £1,000 with money still flooding in.
Well done Mary and here's to the next 'At Home with Mary' event!
