Emergency services from Inverness were called to the scene on the A832 north of Inverness between the Tore roundabout and Muir of Ord shortly after 5.30pm close to the Fettes Sawmill and Garguston Farm.
Fire personnel tackled the blaze and it's understood one vehicle ended up in a field.
A man, in his thirties, who was driving a blue Mazda 6 died from his injuries.
The driver of a black Volkswagen Golf, believed to be in his forties was taken to Raigmore Hospital with serious injuries.
A third person, who was driving a white Toyota Hilux, escaped uninjured.
Police are appealing for witnesses.
