The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) say all options will be considered when reviewing how radioactive material could be transported from Dounreay to the USA.
This will include the potential for using Wick John O'Groats Airport which the NDA's working on improving.
At the end of March, the UK governments agreed that we would receive uranium used in the treatment of cancer, with highly enriched uranium (HEU) from Caithness being sent to the USA in exchange.

Speaking to MFR News earlier this month, Highland Council expressed their concerns about a possible transfer via ship, as the waters of the North Coast are particularly treacherous. These issues are coupled by Highland Council noting a lack of Emergency Towing Vessels (ETVs) along that stretch of water, with the agreement to patrol the waters from Orkney only being extended until the start of September by the UK government.
