A man has died following a fire at a block of flats. Emergency services were called to the blaze in a top floor flat in Newton Drive in Macduff, Aberdeenshire, shortly after midnight.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a man from the property, but he died a short time later.
Five other residents in the building had to be rescued, including one who escaped to safety down a ladder from a third floor window.
A number of other residents were treated for smoke inhalation after the fire, which was so severe it caused the roof of the top floor flat to collapse.
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service group manager Davie Meldrum, who was at the scene, said: The crews worked very hard throughout the night and rescued a further five people from the block. One of those five was rescued by ladder from a third floor window and four others were walked to safety.
There were around 15 flats in the block and the remainder of residents managed to self-evacuate. The fire was brought under control by 3.57am this morning. A joint investigation into the cause will now take place between SFRS and Police Scotland.
Over the coming days we will be carrying out a post incident response to this fire and visiting residents in the surrounding area to provide them with fire safety advice.''
