HIAL will meet with the Prospect union later this week in an attempt to avert strike action by airport security staff.

Talks have been agreed between the sides ahead of the planned 48 hour walk out next week.

Members back a strike ballot last week after the airport operator refused a pay rise.

The union had been seeking a near 30% increase.

HIAL branded this figure as 'unreasonable'.

Talks aiming to resolve the dispute will take place on Wednesday.

Prospect National secretary Alan Denney said: “The request to resume discussions in a bid to resolve this pay dispute is a very welcome surprise.

“Although I have not yet received their written request to reopen talks, I contacted Mr Lyon as soon as I heard there was an opportunity to resolve this via negotiation.

"I will be returning early from leave to meet HIAL management on Wednesday morning.

“Our members have always seen strike action as the option of last resort and we welcome any chance to settle this dispute.”
