Why the pool in Rio has turned green*

The Olympic diving pool in Rio is undergoing tests after the water has changed from a light blue colour to murkey green.

Since the colour change became noticeable during the Women’s 10m synchronised diving final earlier in the week, theories about the cause have been circulating on social media.

Here in the North of Scotland we have our very own large pool of green-coloured water: The Green Loch.

Situted in the Glenmore Forest Park, a few miles from Aviemore, An Lochan Uaine (Gaelic for small green loch) has intrigued people for centuries with its distinctive green colour.

Legend has it that the water is green because the pixies used to wash their clothes in the loch.

Could this be what's changing the colour of the water in Rio?
