Coronation Street bosses apologise to viewers for ‘racist’ comment
Some viewers were offended by the scene
Coronation Street bosses have apologised to offended viewers after airing a ‘racist’ comment during a recent episode of the show.
When Monday night’s episode of the popular ITV soap aired, fans were quick to flood social media with complaints about the show after being left unhappy at a particular scene.
The scene involved characters Eva Price and Audrey Roberts discussing hair styles in the salon. Eva, who is played by actress Katherine Tyldesley then said “I have more roots than Kunta Kinte. No idea who that is by the way, just something my mum used to say.”
The comment left viewers angry and disappointed at the soap, with some calling it a ‘racist’ remark. They took to social media to express their opinion.
After receiving complaints, a spokesperson for ITV has now apologised for the upset, she said “We apologise if this dialogue has caused offence”.
Corrie isn’t the only soap to have caused offence recently. Emmerdale bosses also come under fire from viewers who were unhappy when a poor taste comment aired about Cerebal Palsy.
The scene involved characters Dan Spencer and Nicola King enjoying a bottle of wine together before Nicola, who is played by actress Nicola Wheeler, said "You can't go around like that, all cocked. You look like you've got that, what is it? Himi, Hemi, Hemiplegia."
The comments left fans of the show outraged as Hemiplegia in infants and children is a type of Cerebral Palsy, leaving them with paralysis on one side of the body. Upon feeling that Emmerdale were comparing Hemiplegia to being drunk, angry and disappointed fans took to Twitter to slam the show, with some even threatening to 'boycot' it.
Both shows continue to air weekdays on ITV.
