Two people die after car collides with tree in Spennymoor

A man and a woman have died after a Jeep collided with a tree in the early hours of yesterday morning (July 29).

A second female passenger suffered serious injuries and remains in a stable condition in hospital following the incident on Whitworth Lane in Spennymoor.

Police have confirmed the incident happened shortly before 7am, with an investigation now underway to find out what happened.

An appeal for information and dashcam footage has also been launched.

In a statement, Durham Police said: "Police are appealing for information following a fatal collision in Spennymoor this morning (Saturday, July 29).

"A black Jeep Cherokee collided with a tree on Whitworth Lane shortly before 7am.

"Sadly, a man and woman within the car were pronounced dead at the scene.

"A second female passenger suffered serious injuries and was taken to James Cook Hospital, where she remains in a stable condition.

"Their families have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

"An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances of the collision, and officers would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or saw the vehicle beforehand.

"Anybody with dashcam footage that may assist officers is also asked to get in touch as soon as possible.
