Two injured in mass brawl in Sunderland

Police were called to an incident in Eden House Road in Sunderland at 4.37pm yesterday, following reports that a group of men and women were fighting in the street.

Officers and ambulance service attended and found two people, a man aged 30 and a woman aged 29, had sustained injuries in a collision with a vehicle. The man had leg injuries and the woman facial injuries.

They were both taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital by paramedics, their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Officers have been carrying out enquiries in the area and are appealing for witnesses. Police believe there may have been an earlier altercation involving the man and woman at the Bangla Town Superstore on Eden Terrace.

Neighbourhood Inspector Tony Carty said: "We are still in the process of fully establishing what has happened and we're appealing for help from the community. I'd urge anyone with information to come forward and speak to our officers."

Additional neighbourhood officers remain in the area to reassure the community and continue their investigations.

Six men have been arrested on suspicion of assault offences.

The men, aged 26, 28, 30, 34, 48 and 54, and are all detained in custody helping police with their enquiries
