Tributes are being paid to a six year old girl who's died after a tree fell on her at a school in Newcastle.

The incident happened at Gosforth Park First School on Friday afternoon and Northumbria Police say the girl died in hospital yesterday morning.

A spokeswoman for the force said:

"At 1.15pm yesterday we received a report that a child had been struck by a falling tree at Gosforth Park First School.

"Emergency services attended the scene and the six-year-old girl was taken to hospital.

"Sadly, earlier today, the young girl passed away.

"Our officers are continuing to support her family and our thoughts are with them at this incredibly difficult time.

"An investigation has been launched with police working in conjunction with the health and safety executive.''

The headteacher of the school said staff and students were "shocked and devastated" and that they'll be given extra support.

A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said:

"HSE is aware that this is now a fatal incident and we will work alongside Northumbria Police to investigate.

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family at this sad time.''
