Tim Peake’s Spacecraft lands in Shildon today

The spacecraft which transported Tim Peake to and from the International Space Station will be on display at Locomotion

Today is the day that Tim Peake, who is the UK’s first European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut’s spacecraft will be coming to Locomotion in Shildon. This is the first time the spacecraft will be in the North East.

Visitors will get a once in a lifetime chance to see the spacecraft, Soyuz TMA-19M capsule, which transported Tim Peake on his first trip to the International Space Station (ISS) and back to Earth. The spacecraft has its equipped interior and is being displayed with its 25metre parachute, you can also see re-entry marks on the outside of the capsule.

The arrival is part of the nationwide tour by the Science Museum Group and Samsung. As well as being able to see the Soyuz capsule there will be a range of activities to take part in too, including a virtual reality experience, Space Descent. Narrated by Tim Peake, it simulates the experience from inside the spacecraft on its 250-mile journey back to Earth.

The experience has been produced especially for the Science Museum Group with Samsung providing a Samsung Gear VR Headsets along with a VR lounge.

Tim spent 6 months in space returning back to Earth June 2016. While he was on the ISS he walked on space missions and ran the London Marathon.

The display will run from today until 15th January 2018.
