After a brief delay due to Covid 19 the thriving network of Wearside and Durham heritage groups are combining to run the largest history fair in the region for years !

On Saturday, 21st May from 10.00 to 4.00 pm the ever-popular Sunderland History Fair will be very much open to the public in the modern and extensive Bethany Church, Bede Tower, Burdon Road, Sunderland SR2 7EA.

Free car parking is available in the main and overflow car parks. A regular bus service via Sunderland Interchange stops only yards away. Hot and cold food will be available throughout the day.

The event will be opened this year by the nationally renowned best-selling local author Glenda Young whose books will be on sale.

Seventy tables and exhibitions representing all of the local history and heritage groups in the region as well as commercial organisations and public sector groups will be available. Rotten Romans, vicious Vikings and smashing Anglo-Saxons will re-enact and will mingle (peacefully) with the crowd !

A series of expert speakers will give illustrated talks on aspects of the history of Wearside – including Sunderland AFC, the Lambtons and the infamous dancer and courtesan Lola Montez !

The famous 74 gun HMS Venerable on which Jack Crawford “nailed the flag to the mast” and vintage Victorian and Edwardian bicycles ridden by vintage Victorians and Edwardians will be weaving in and out of the crowds.

A vintage bus will run tours and connect with other heritage sites which will be open on the day including the Sunderland Antiquarians, the 18th Century Donnison School, the Maritime Heritage Trust and the Queen Street Freemasons’ Hall.

All are welcome on Saturday, the 21st May at the Sunderland History Fair ! Bring a friend – in fact bring lots of friends and spend all day!
