Stand Up To Racism… In Newcastle
A public meeting will be held in the city centre tonight.
Campaigners are standing together with migrants, refugees and asylum seekers in Newcastle later, after a reported rise in hate crimes.
Stand Up to Racism are rallying people together for a public meeting tonight after dealing with attacks on several communities here.
Speakers include Stand Up To Racism, Newcastle Unites, Show Racism the Red Card, Islamic Diversity Centre, Refugee Support Networks and trade unions.
Yunus Bakhsh, from the North East group, said:
“There’s a great concern that we’re having to deal with a heightened level of racism and people want to know what they can do about it. So the meeting is entitled stand up to racism and we want people to come along, talk about their concerns and what they can do.
“The refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants are not responsible for austerity, the government is responsible for austerity.
“They’re not talking about take people’s jobs they simply want their families to be safe. I think we have a responsibility and we have always had a responsibility to look after people who are seeking assistance and help. That is a basic human need and human right.”
The meeting will be held at 7pm at Brunswick Methodist Church.
It’s ahead of a national anti racism protest will follow in London next weekend.
