From Forest Hall to Whitley Bay, North Tyneside welcomes its first interactive art trail - raising money for a North East charity.

Newcastle based, award-winning software house Nebula Labs worked with North Tyneside Council and partners to produce the interactive apps for people to use to track and map 15 big brightly coloured sculptures, based on human emotions.

The app will let people track their progress finding all 15 works - and give them hints and nudges while out and about too

It follows the success of previous interactive trails including Morph’s Epic Art Adventure in 2022 and The Snowman™ and The Snowdog trail during the winter of 2020.

The latest SmileyWorld® Art Trail has been created through a collaboration between The Smiley Company® and creative producers Wild in Art, and funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund with the North of Tyne Combined Authority as the lead authority.

Nebula Labs CEO Dylan McKee says,

“We have worked with North Tyneside Council for many years, to encourage more people to visit the area with lots of events and activities and attractions. The interactive apps we have developed for each art trail have been really exciting and enjoyable to do.

"I’m really looking forward to the SmileyWorld® Art Trail repeating the success of previous trails, getting people out and exploring the area, and helping local businesses too - and hopefully bringing more smiles to lots of faces!”

The sculptures are located in North Shields, Forest Hall, Killingworth, Tynemouth, Cullercoats, Wallsend and Whitley Bay. Designed to get people talking about their own emotions, they include admiration, calmness, anxiety, sadness, excitement, joy and pride.

The SmileyWorld® Art Trail runs from 26 January to 2 April in support of St Oswald’s Hospice.

The app is available for iPhone and Android phones.
