Roads closed after suspicious package found in Darlington

Durham police are describing it as a serious incident and a bomb disposal teams are at the scene

Bomb disposal units are on the scene in Darlington after a suspicious package was found at a house on Kendrew Street.

Workers in the local area have been evacuated with the road closures set to be in place for some time - drivers are being warned of disruption and are being asked to avoid the area.

Durham Police have given us the following statement...

SEVERAL roads have been closed due to a police incident in Darlington town centre.

A section of the A68 between Bondgate and Northgate has been closed, along with King Street and Kendrew Street as well as a section of Gladstone Street between North Lodge Terrace and North Road.

A 100-metre cordon has been put in place and residents are being evacuated following the discovery of a suspicious package at a property in Kendrew Street.

Explosives experts from Catterick Garrison are on their way to the scene to assess the situation.

The road closures are expected to be in place for some time and drivers are urged to avoid the area if possible.
