Roads policing officers around the North East are issuing road safety advice as the darker days and nights draw in.

Drivers, pedestrians and other road users are being reminded to take extra care after the clocks went back and the dark mornings and evenings arrive, meaning visibility is reduced.

• Pedestrians are being reminded to use formal crossing facilities and avoid distraction such as phones or headphones whilst crossing.

• Motorcyclists and cyclists are urged to wear reflective clothing and appropriate safety wear including helmets.

• Drivers are also being urged to be aware of those who may be wearing darker clothing, and to take extra care when looking out for pedestrians and other road users.

Sergeant Mark Kewley said: “As the darker starts and nights arrive and the weather worsens as the winter draws nearer, we have previously seen an increase in collisions resulting in people injured and so we’re reminding all road users to be extra careful.

“Visibility reduces as the season changes and we want to avoid as many collisions as possible so that we can keep everyone as safe as we possibly can.”
