Today (21st April) the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) will be sending out its own call for help, as it officially launches this year’s Mayday Mile fundraiser.

The charity is hoping as many people as possible across the North East will sign up to the challenge, to complete at least one mile this May.

This can be wherever and however – walking, jogging, hopping or skipping. It’s also easy to sign up: rnli.org/SupportMayday

It’s part of the RNLI’s Mayday campaign to help raise essential funds to provide vital training and equipment to keep their lifesavers safe, while they risk their lives to save others.

Elliot Rogers, RNLI Water Safety Delivery Support, North and East said: ‘Summer is our busiest time of year, with thousands of people at risk of geting into danger by the water. Ordinary people just enjoying days out with family or friends.

‘Mayday is our own call for help, as we rely on the generosity of the public to take part in events like the Mayday Mile and raise the funds that allow us to be there when we’re needed most. But we need to be ready. Training, kit, stations, fuel … these are just some of the things we need to save lives, and that your fundraising can help provide.’

The RNLI’s Mayday national fundraiser begins on Sunday 1 May and will run for the whole month across the UK and Ireland. For more information, please visit: rnli.org/SupportMayday
