As part of NE1’s Christmas events programme, the team have organised the welcome return of NE1’s 24 Doors of Christmas, the city’s alternative advent calendar. This will be the fourth year NE1 has transformed the city into a giant advent calendar opening doors and giving exclusive access to some of Newcastle’s most iconic, historic and unusual buildings throughout December.

This year, the only doors you will want to open between the 1st to the 24th December will have NE1’s 24 Doors welcome mat. The events are free to attend but booking is essential.

Newcastle’s historic treasure, the Lit and Phil, and next door neighbour, the Common Room of the North as well as the Tyne Theatre and Opera House are just a few of the much-loved venues taking part this year. Grey’s Monument returns for another day in the calendar, with the iconic structure always extremely popular with people clamouring to climb its 164 steps for the bird’s eye view of the city, made all the more special by Newcastle’s Christmas lights twinkling below. Fittingly, Newcastle Cathedral has been secured for the 24th Door on Christmas Eve.

Exclusive access is also being granted to visitors at several private companies who occupy unusual and historic properties. Ryder Architecture will be one of the companies opening the doors to their property, Cooper’s Studio on Westgate Road. Built in the 1800s and a lovingly restored by the architectural practice, the award-winning building is a rare surviving example of a purpose-built multi-storey horse and carriage store. The event will also include an exclusive, sneak peek tour of the city’s newest building, the 14-storey Bank House. Set to open in early 2023, the building forms part of Newcastle’s Pilgrim Street developments.

Immersive experiences are also included in this year’s line-up. With gin tastings at The Continental in their private underground ‘Gin Vaults’, as well as coffee and cake making masterclasses with the team from PureKnead in their newly created craft kitchen. Many of these sessions are being designed exclusively for the 24 Doors calendar.

Places are limited on all the ‘doors’ and available on a first come, first served basis, to book visit NewcastlesChristmas.com. Details of all the days will be listed on the website and bookings will open on Monday 14 November.

Rachel Barlow, Marketing and Events Manager at NE1 Ltd said;

“Our 24 Doors of Christmas is one of Newcastle’s festive favourites and we are delighted to be bringing it back again this year. We are so thankful to the companies and buildings who will be throwing open their doors and working with us to welcome the public behind the scenes. The event is always incredibly popular, with many of these opportunities unique and bespoke to 24 Doors, so we urge people to book tickets as soon as they can to avoid disappointment, and enjoy exploring Newcastle’s hidden gems throughout December.”
