People across the North East are being reminded to dispose their real Christmas trees in the greenest way possible.

After the festive season they can be recycled into good quality compost or wood chippings, as opposed to ending up in landfill.

Richard Cooper is a forester for Forestry England in Northumberland and he said: "So as a top tip, if you wrap in your tree in an old duvet cover that'll catch any needles when you're taking it from the house. If you want to go that bit extra next year, then you could opt for a potted tree, they look good outside your front door and it'll save you a bit of cash the following year.

"A recycled Christmas tree get chipped and they can be turned into compost which can be put around your local park and the compost can help new plants grow.

"You might be losing the tree from your living room but we have forests all over where you can go for a walk or a run. It's a great way to sort out your January blues as well."
