We'll be going along with them to see what children in our region can learn about modern hate crime and prejudice.

Nearly 200 North East students are heading to Poland this morning to learn about racism and prejudice at Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial.

It's part of a project by the Holocaust Educational Trust and aims to increase knowledge and understanding of the tragedy and to signal what can happen if prejudice and racism become acceptable.

More than a million jews lost their lives in the camps at the hands of the Nazis during the Second World War.

The children have already heard from a Holocaust survivor and will fully experience the history, during the trip today.

We've sent our reporter Charlotte Murphy with them to talk about the lessons they've learned, keep your eyes on our Twitter for more.
