The opening date of Newcastle's Christmas Market has been revealed.

Newcastle City Council have announced that the cities Christmas markets will return this year on 2nd of December.

The market, which was cancelled last year due to the pandemic, has returned later than its usual mid-November start.

This years market will feature 30 market stalls around Grey's Monument creating a little winter wonderland, and will be open until Christmas Eve.

However, the festivities may not be as big has they have been in the past.

It was revealed in September that the giant market which took over the city centre in 2019, with fairground rides, stalls, and bars stretching along Blackett Street and Northumberland Street, would not be returning.

Last years virtual Christmas market was a celebration of local trade, a theme which will be carried on to this year.

There will be a local focus on this years market, with traders now being able to apply for a stall themselves.

The council said it “wants to give local traders the opportunity to bring something special” and that the event would be “a chance to showcase Newcastle’s finest produce".
