The moment a burglar broke in to a 'stinger flat' in Newcastle has been released by Northumbria Police.

The footage is being shared to highlight how important home security is.

Officers fitted a flat in Newcastle with CCTV meaning the burglar was caught on camera - it shows a man climb in through an open window before stealing a laptop.

Neighbourhood Inspector Darren Adams said: "We know the consequences for victims of burglary and the effect being broken into can have on them and we are determined to make sure burglars are put before the courts. We're releasing this footage as a reminder to people of how easy it can be for burglars. It literally only takes burglars minutes to be in and out of the property with valuable items, this is made even easier for them if a window or door is left open.

A man has been convicted for the burglary shown in the footage.
