Suspected hit and run in Newcastle
Last updated 3rd Mar 2021
Officers investigating a suspected hit and run involving a car and an electric scooter have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
Shortly before 11pm on Monday (March 1) we received a report that a car had been in collision with an e-scooter on Osborne Road in Jesmond, Newcastle.
It was reported that the rider was travelling north along the road when, for reasons yet to be established, a silver Skoda Fabia collided with the scooter.
The 19-year-old male rider had to jump from the scooter in a bid to narrowly avoid injury. The impact with the car resulted in the scooter being significantly damaged.
The driver of the Skoda left the scene without exchanging details and before emergency services had arrived.
An investigation has been launched into the incident, and police have since located the Skoda believed to have been involved which had been left abandoned nearby.
Sergeant Dave Roberts, of Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols department, said: “This was a serious incident that could have easily caused the rider to sustain significant or potentially fatal injuries.
“Thankfully that wasn’t the case on this occasion and the rider was able to jump from the scooter before the point of impact, but that is down to sheer luck.
“The vehicle involved did not stop and had left the scene before police arrived. We are now carrying out a range of enquiries to identify the driver and would ask that person – or anybody who knows them – to come forward.
“This happened on a busy, residential street so we believe somebody will have seen what happened. A number of drivers were in the area at the time so we would also ask you to check any dashcam footage and let us know if you see a silver Skoda which matches our description.
“We will continue to use every tactic at our disposal in order to protect all our road users and will take swift and robust action against anybody who endangers the lives of others.”
