Will Christmas ever smell as good?

The buttery soft scent of those freshly baked cookies Grannie used to make for your birthday. That whiff of your local chippy whilst you’re on your way home to your defrosted obligation. The smell of bacon sizzling away on a Saturday morning before you seize the day. But there’s no bacon in sight. That’s right, food scented candles are officially the ‘IT’ present this year and your holiday season is about to smell a whole lot… tastier!

Smells are that sentimental passage to the past, so what better place to be transported to than your favourite food happy place? Step up national burger joint, Fat Hippo, proud to have turned the Secret Santa game upside-down as they light up this festive season with hints of their signature flavours, bacon and pickle! Adding quite the flavourful and aromatic twist to their offering, creating not one, but two uniquely, vegan, scented candle creations: A bacon scented candle and pickle scented candle. Imagine bacon without the calories, and a jar of pickles you’ll never need to put back in the fridge!

As a nation of nostalgists, whose hearts can often be found through our stomachs, it’s no surprise to see savoury smells succeeding. Scent, emotion and memory are closely intertwined into our brains chemistry. Smells are handled by our olfactory bulb, a structure found in the front of the brain that sends information to the body’s central command system. With odours taking a direct route to the amygdala and hippocampus, regions related to our memories and emotions, a simple smell has the ability to trigger strong sentimental thoughts and feelings. It’s this scent-imental feeling you CAN bottle up - or rather preserve in soy wax and light on demand!

Stocking fillers will smell good this year!

We already know conventional candles are melting away. With the likes of Jeremy Clarkson raising eyebrows with his “Bollock” scented candle, or when Gwyneth Paltrow dropped a £58 candle that was, let’s say, quite personal? As well as industry giants Greggs’ preserving their potent pasties in paraffin. Now, Fat Hippo join the list, adding their ‘two-scents’ to food scented candles that smell good enough to eat!

"This year, we wanted to create a gift that was head-turning and fun, just like our brand, but still delicious and perfect for the foodie in everyone’s life" said Nick Fountain, Head of Marketing and Communications at Fat Hippo. "We're already known for our top tasting burgers, so why not take the candle market on with the next closest thing - burger smells! Teaming up with candle crafters Hot Wax, a small independent, local to our HQ in Newcastle, our BurgerLab have had great fun collaborating on such a different project. It really is one of those things you’d question at first but want to try straight after.”

Each candle is hand-poured with 100% natural soy wax, and the scents have been authentically carefully crafted to be vegan-friendly. Priced at £15 each, expect this to be the ultimate gift to surprise the burger lover in your life with something a little different this year, and have their humble abode smelling just like their favourite burger happy place.

Available exclusively online on Fat Hippo’s website, with a limited run - once they’re gone, they’re gone… Don’t blow it!
