Man in critical condition after serious assault in County Durham

An investigation has been launched following a serious assault in Crook on Friday evening.

A man in his 40s was found seriously injured in the alleyway behind Bell Street shortly before 6pm.

He was taken to hospital and remains in a critical condition.

A 40-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in custody.

Two women, in their 30s, were also arrested but have since been released pending further enquiries.

A police presence is likely to remain at the scene until at least tomorrow.

Detective Superintendent Yvonne Dutson, of Durham Constabulary, said: “I would like to thank the public for their patience while we are at the scene.

“I would like to reassure them that we believe this is an isolated incident and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with what happened.”
