Man dead after Redheugh Bridge crash

The crash caused the road to be closed until 8 this morning

Police are appealing for witnesses after a collision on the A189 Redheugh Bridge yesterday evening.

At around 11.10pm on Wednesday (10 April) police received reports of a collision involving two vehicles on the bridge in Gateshead.

The north and southbound carriageways were closed until 8am this morning (Thursday) to allow the collision to be dealt with.

The driver of one of the vehicles, a 36-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 53-year-old man, was taken to hospital with a leg injury. His condition is serious but not life-threatening.

Officers are carrying out enquiries and are appealing for witnesses.
