Police are appealing for witnesses to a serious assault in Newcastle city centre as a man is charged.

At around 9.15pm on Monday, police responded to reports a male had sustained serious injuries consistent with having been struck with a bladed article on St Mary’s Place.

The victim remains in hospital and is currently receiving treatment for his injuries, which are non-life-threatening.

An 18-year-old man was arrested at the scene, and was last night charged with assault and possession of an offensive weapon.

He is due to appear at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court today (Wednesday.)

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing and officers are continuing to carry out a range of enquiries to establish exactly what has happened.

They have already spoken with a number of witnesses and reviewed CCTV but are asking for anyone else who might have information, to come forward.
