Police investigating a fatal hit and run in Newcastle say they’ve made an arrest and recovered a vehicle.

Shortly after 7.20pm on Saturday night police received a report of a collision involving two pedestrians and a dark coloured car on Jesmond Road, near the Punch Bowl.

Emergency services attended but sadly the female pedestrian, who was 75, died at the scene.

The male pedestrian, aged 79, was taken to hospital with serious injuries believed to be life-threatening.

Their family is being supported by specialist officers at this time.

An investigation was launched to trace the vehicle and its driver, which had made off from the scene.

Officers have now arrested a 22-year-old-male on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and he remains in police custody at this time.

Sergeant Matt Sykes of Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols unit thanked the public for their quick response to the appeal and encouraged any further witnesses to come forward.

He said: "This was a tragic incident which has taken the life of one woman and left a man seriously injured. Our thoughts are with their family and friends at this time.

"I want to thank all the witnesses who have come forward and helped with our enquiries and thank everyone who helped share the appeal. We are still interested in speaking with anyone else who might have seen what happened, or thinks they may have dashcam footage. Please contact us as soon as possible if you think you can assist."
