Hexham boxer Scott Westgarth has died aged 31 - apparently from injuries sustained in a win on Saturday.

He was taken to hospital following a points victory over Dec Spelman in Doncaster - having appeared to be in pain during post-fight interviews.

The promoter for the match, Stefy Bull, has tweeted "it's been the hardest few days" he's had to endure - and sent his thoughts to Westgarth's family

North East boxing promoter Steve Wraith says the loss of Scott is devastating.

Simon Block, Honorary Secretary of the Commonwealth Boxing Council, said:

"As of this morning, the cause of death is unknown and I understand no operation was performed. Coming off a winning contest as Scott was, this tragedy is a mystery right now and I am sure that once this is known, the BBB of C will take whatever action is necessary to prevent a re-occurrence.

"Whatever sorrow we feel will be nothing compared with that being felt by Scott's family and close friends. It is to them I express my most sincere condolences."
