Fire crews deal with blaze on Newcastle Quayside

A fire broke out at the Quilted Camel bar on Sandhill, near the Red House pub

Northumbria Police are assisting Tyne and Wear fire service who are dealing with a fire on Newcastle Quayside - at the Quilted Camel.

No one is believed to be injured, but the surrounding buildings have been evacuated and some roads are closed nearby, including the Swing Bridge and Newcastle Quayside road.

The Close from Skinnerburn Road is also closed as well as the pedestrian street from Dean Street down to the Quayside.

Fire fighters are still working to extinguish the fire and ask people in the area to keep their windows and doors closed due to the smoke.

Officers and fire fighters are asking people to avoid the area where possible and use alternate routes.

Officers are carrying out enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
