Dan Toward is determined to become the new poster boy for North East - as he prepares to star on terrestrial television again tonight (Fri 1st March)

The 22-year-old fights for the third time as a professional, in Telford, live on Channel 5 from 10pm.

Toward, a 10 times national amateur champion, has made a flying start to life in the paid ranks and plans on dazzling in front of a huge national TV audience.

The former Birtley ABC star has left Newcastle to train with Dave Coldwell in Rotherham and while he believes that new partnership will take him to the top, he can't wait for it to bring him home.

Super welterweight puncher Toward said: "I have made the move to Rotherham, to start training with Dave Coldwell. He is one of the best coaches in the country, if not the best.

"He has a proven track record of producing world champions and I believe I will be his next one. I made the decision to leave Graeme Rutherford and Birtley ABC but I haven't got a bad word to say about them. I wouldn't be the fighter, or person, I am today, without them."

He added: "Whether it's in Sunderland or Newcastle, it's great that big fights and big nights are coming back to the North East. We'd not seen that in Newcastle since Lewis Ritson and I believe I will be the one to take that on and bring title fights and big nights to the city."

Toward fights over six rounds against Frank Madsen in Telford later and tipped the scales at 154.13lbs on Thursday.

"I know I am going to the top and, this year, is about building," he added.

"I don't want to be fighting journeymen with 5-80 records, who only come to survive.

"The better the fighter you put me in with, the better performance you will see from Dan Toward. I will be building this year but next year I am going to clean up on the domestic scene and start picking up belts.
