Ashington former soldier to get surprise birthday visit in Indian prison

Nick Dunn will see his dad for the first time in more than three years.

An Ashington former solider is getting a surprise visit from his dad this week, as the fight to free him from Indian prison continues.

Nick Dunn is one of six British men arrested in 2013 for firearms charges that were originally quashed.

Last year a court found they had entered Indian waters without permission carrying unlicensed firearms, despite the former soldiers insisting they were conducting legitimate anti-piracy work protecting merchant ships.

Now serving a five-year prison sentence, Nick will be visited by his Dad for the first time since the arrest alongside his sister Lisa who has tirelessly campaigned for the lads’ freedom.

James Dunn, Nick’s dad, said:

“It’ll be a very emotional journey and when we see each other it’ll be out of this world. I’ll be very proud of him and I’ll be telling him that.

“He’s feeling very angry. He’ll be feeling tired and hopefully by him seeing me and Lisa there on his birthday it will give him a massive boost.”

Ministers say they have raised the case of the Chennai Six more than 40 times already, with Prime Minister Theresa May describing it as a ‘case of concern’ during a visit to India last year.

Nick’s sister Lisa led a campaign to Downing Street with Metro Radio 1000 days after the arrest and insists she won’t give up until her brother is him. She said:

“Although he is strong and his strength is still there, reading between the lines I know my brother is becoming really low. He’s becoming very very tired. He wants to see his family desperately.

“You build yourself up to each date thinking this is it, this is where we’ll get my brother home but those dates just pass over and over again.”

All this week Nick’s family will be video blogging for Metro Radio about their visit to India, as we anxiously wait for a verdict on the appeal. Get the very latest @metroradionews.
