Six arrested as man dies of stab wounds in South Shields

The 25 year old was found by emergency services in the early hours of Saturday morning

Six men are being questioned by police following a suspected stabbing in South Shields.

Police received a reports of an altercation on Marshall Wallis Road, just before 1am on Saturday morning.

Emergency services found a 25 year old man with suspected stab wounds at the scene.

He was taken to hospital where he later passed away from his injuries.

Northumbria Police are now appealing to the public for information and witnesses.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Woods, who is leading the investigation, says the man's family and friends are being supported by specialist officers.

He said: "First and foremost, our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time.

“We would ask that their privacy is respected as they continue to try to come to terms with their loss.”

He added: “We want to reassure the man’s family that we are doing all we can to understand the full circumstances which led to this tragedy and bring anyone involved to justice.

“We understand that a number of people may have been present at the time of the incident and would appeal to anyone who hasn’t already come forward to contact us."

Extra officers will remain in the area as police carry out further investigations.
