Spennymoor driver who admitted injuring woman as car plunged from bridge onto A1 sentenced.

A man who admitted seriously injuring a woman after a stolen car plunged from a flyover onto the A1 has been sentenced.

Hugh Raymond Holmes pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking - a Vauxhall Astra - and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He also admitted to two further summary charges of driving without insurance and failing to provide a specimen of breath.

32 year old Holmes, of Tudhoe Moor, Spennymoor, was given a 4 year sentence, that has been reduced to jail time of 2 years and 8 months after his guilty plea and after he spent time in prison since the offence happened.

He's also been disqualified from driving for 7 years.

Emergency services were called to J61 Bowburn Interchange on the morning of 21st January.

A car plunged onto the A1 from an overhead bridge. A woman in her 40s was left with serious injuries after being airlifted to hospital.

A Durham Constabulary spokeswoman said: “Not only did Hugh Holmes knowingly take a car without permission, but he was also completely unfit to be behind the wheel.

“His reckless actions resulted in horrific injuries for his passenger which will affect her for the rest of her life.
