Communities will gather on beaches across the UK, on November 11th, to say goodbye.

During the war, millions of men and women left their shores, with many never to return; Pages Of The Sea will be a unique moment to say goodbye, together. Running up to November 11th, you can find someone to say goodbye to here. You can also search the online gallery, or upload your own image, to say a personal goodbye to someone from your family or community.

There will also be workshops that complement the Pages Of The Sea event running across the North East, leading up to the 11th November. More details on the workshops, including topics, dates and times will be on their website shortly- if you are interested in getting involved, contact [email protected]

On the day- 11th November 12pm-3pm:

Visit Roker Beach, Sunderland, to view the giant sand portrait of second Lieutenant Hugh Carr, who lost his life in the First World War. The drawing will start early morning and will be fully completed by approximately 12pm.

Hugh Carr was born in Houghton-le-Spring on July 13th, 1891, to parents Thomas Carr and Mary Ann Carr (nee Davidson). He was apprenticed as a mining engineer to Lambton & Hetton Collieries Ltd for seven years, starting in 1905. He died in the Ypres salient, in January 1916 when a German shell landed near his trench

Stencil your own 'soldier in the sand' and contribute to this giant piece of artwork, or listen to specially commissioned poem by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, or the Pages Of The Sea Choir, that will be performing on the day. For more information, or to sign up, contact [email protected]
