29th March 2020 from 3pm
Last updated 3rd Feb 2020
Metro Radio are proudly supporting Newcastle Speedway and their 90th anniversary of their great club!
Not many British Speedway clubs can boast a 90th anniversary, and fewer again that can boast that achievement on the very self-same track as they still race on today, but the Newcastle Diamonds can stand proud for having achieved just that.
2019 was the actual 90th anniversary season, but with a bad run with weather and running out of available dates, the big celebration had to be shelved!
Until Rob Grant and his new-look Newcastle Speedway have honoured that family fun event and will run a truly important meeting in recognition of a fine record, as their 2020 opening meeting on Sunday March 29th with a start time of 5.00pm, and doors opening at 3.00pm.
Over the next few weeks, the remaining 14 competitors will be revealed, and its' promised not to disappoint, added to a plethora of former retired riders donning their leathers and kevlars once again to add to the entertainment.
There will also be live music and licenced bars, food outlets, fireworks, a funfair and all for a reduced admission cost which will see adults costs at £10.00 and concessions at £5.00 and under 16’s go FREE!
The first ever speedway action on the Byker shale was in May 1929 when Newcastle competed in the English Dirt Track League, finishing in fourth place behind Halifax, Preston and league winners Leeds. Newcastle rider Gordon Byers won the first official race that season on the Brough Park track, becoming one of the first Tyneside dirt track stars.
