Sunderland Mum's Warning After Son Killed By Speeding Driver

Published 10th Nov 2015

You are more likely to be hit by a car in November in the North East than ANY other time of year.

That's the claim from research out today which says the number of pedestrians involved in road accidents goes up by 42% in November.

Sunderland mum Violet Atkinson told Metro her son Steven was killed by a speeding driver in 2009 - he was just 12 years old.

At around 8.45pm on Saturday 17 October 2009, Steven was knocked off his bike on Chester Road. He was immediately rushed to Sunderland Royal Hospital where he died from his injuries.

Violet says nothing can prepare you as a parent to hear that news.

"We don't have the life we had, our life was changed that minute, that instant and it will never be the same. Just be careful and watch what you are doing because you never know what is going to happen. Never. We never thought it would happen to us. But it did."
