Man Arrested on suspicion of Murder
Police have arrested a man on suspicion of murder in Newcastle. At 10:51pm on Thursday, April 2, police received a report of a disturbance inside a house Ladykirk Road in the Benwell area of the city. Officers attended the address and found a woman inside with serious injuries. Paramedics attended and the 23-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody. A murder investigation is now underway and enquiries are ongoing into the incident. A section of Ladykirk Road has been cordoned off while enquiries are carried out by officers in the area. Northumbria Police Chief Inspector David Gould said:
- "We have extra officers in the area carrying out enquiries and a visible policing presence in the area to reassure local residents. * * * Due to the emergency service activity in the area there were lots of people out in the street when we attended this evening and I'd urge anyone with any information into the incident to come forward and speak to officers as soon as possible. We believe that the victim and the man that has been arrested were known to each other and we have officers at the scene and surrounding area carrying out enquiries to establish what exactly happened. I'd urge anyone with any information to contact police with information"
Norhtumbria Police have referred the incident to the IPCC, as a matter of course, due to recent police contact with the victim and offender.
The 25-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder remains in police custody and enquiries are ongoing.
