The North East Chamber of Commerce claim that the economy will take a big hit if both teams are relegated from the premier league.

It's another huge weekend for Newcastle and Sunderland.

As it stands Rafa’s team are currently out of the relegation zone but both Sam's team and Norwich have games in hand over them.

There's also a chance that both of our regions clubs could do down, which the North East Chamber of Commerce claim will see job cuts across both businesses.

James Ramsbotham, Chief Exec, said:

“What the public at large see is the impact on players but actually it’s also about the huge number of people who are employed by what are two very significant businesses.

“It’s the stewards, it’s the hospitality, it’s all the other plethora of jobs that exist in and around the football clubs. Not just at the stadiums but at the training grounds and in various other associated businesses. Without that money there it becomes a much tougher call.

“It’s not just the impact on the economy here. The premiership being such a global industry and seen around the world and for a region that is so big into exporting, to have both of our premiership sides NOT in the premiership does have an impact.”

Tomorrow Sunderland welcome Chelsea to the Stadium of Light, meanwhile Newcastle are on their travels to Aston Villa.
