Coldplay headlined Glastonbury on Sunday night playing tribute to Viola Beach, the Warrington band who sadly died in a car crash earlier this year.

During their set the band's frontman, Chris Martin, said they would normally cover 'Heroes' by David Bowie, they wanted to do something different.

He told the gathered crowd how the late band had reminded Coldplay of their early days,

"We're going to create Viola Beach's alternative future for them and let them play Glastonbury for a song." Chris said, "this would have been Viola Beach in 20 years."

The Coldplay frontman urged the festival-goers to send Viola Beach's nine track album 'Boys That Sing' "up the charts" when it is released later this week.

The 'Viva la Vida' band then projected a live performance of Viola Beach singing 'Boys That Sing' whilst playing alongside the recording.

Coldplay's decision to perform Viola Beach's song received praise from fans in the crowd but also from celebrities across social media.

The band also played 'Fix You', 'Hymn For The Weekend' and 'Charlie Brown', during their Glastonbury set, welcoming Chris Martin's children, Apple and Moses on stage for their new single 'Up & Up' while the children's mother, Gwyneth Paltrow, took photos from the wings.

Barry Gibb was also welcomed on stage with the band to sing 'Stayin' Alive' fulfilling a dream of Michael Eavis, the man behind the huge music festival.
