WATCH: The best bits of John Lewis Christmas adverts

They always know how to make us feel warm and Christmassy.

Published 11th Nov 2016

It's colder outside, Christmas gifts are in the shops, and the woolly hats have come out. That can only mean one thing – it's time for the latest John Lewis Christmas advert!

Known for making us smile, burst into tears or a combination of both (usually the latter), here are all of their festive adverts so far...

2007 - Shadows 'Shadows' was the first John Lewis Christmas advert, and it's hard to believe it was so long ago!

In this advert, we see people stacking items together in a plain white room, whilst a shadow builds on a wall. It's not clear what it is until a child runs in and throws glitter over the piece, bringing the picture to life.

2008 - From Me To You Set to the Beatles 'From Me To You' (covered by employees), the Christmas video of 2008 shows people being paired with present ideas, the thought being that if you know the person well, you're bound to find the right present.

2009 - Sweet Child Of Mine It's all about children in this advert as they're opening gifts for adults like kitchenware, big slippers and adult-size handbags.

The clip is set to Taken By Trees' cover of the Guns n' Roses song, and the tagline is simply 'remember how Christmas used to feel? Give someone that feeling'.

2010 - A Tribute to Givers It's one we can all relate to – the struggle of wrapping an awkwardly-shaped present because you know that your loved one will love it!

In this Christmas advert, set to Ellie Goulding's cover of 'Your Song', we see people struggling to wrap and hide all sorts of gifts. Also, extra cute moment for the pet-lovers when a boy leaves the warmth of his house to hang a stocking outside for his dog.

2011 - The Long Wait Sometimes, it seems like Christmas is taking forever to arrive.

In the 2011 advert, a little boy is opening his advent calendar day by day, looking impatient, waiting for Santa to come.

But when the big day arrives, he runs past his own presents and leans into the wardrobe to fetch a messily-wrapped package... which he's waited all month to give to his mum and dad! Nawwww.

2012 - The Journey In this video, a little girl builds a snowman and a snowlady, but looks disappointed when the snowman's gone by morning.

But he hasn't melted, he's decided to go on his own journey through forests and fields and across mountains, all to buy his snowlady a special Christmas gift! Gabrielle Aplin's singing on the soundtrack really add to the warmth of this advert.

2013 - The Bear and the Hare In 2013 we saw a Disney-style advert about two unlikely friends: a bear and a hare.

The bear leaves to hibernate for the winer, so the hare leaves a Christmas present for when he wakes up. The bear is delighted when he sees Christmas for the first time, with all the animals around the tree.

If that doesn't make your bottom lip wobble, Lily Allen's cover of 'Somewhere Only We Know' will.

2015 - Man on the Moon Last year's tear jerker was appropriately set to a cover of Oasis' 'Half the World Away', and tells the story of a little girl who is looking at the moon, when she spots a elderly man living there, alone.

Every day, she returns to her telescope and decides to try to reach out to him in any way possible at Christmas.

2016 - Buster the Boxer After a series of tear-jerking adverts, it seems John Lewis hoped to raise a laugh with viewers this year! Buster the Boxer tells the story of a dog who looks on enviously as the neighbouring wildlife are playing on a trampoline whilst he's stuck inside.

As the little girl Bridget goes to bed for Santa’s arrival, her dad can be seen carefully building a brand new trampoline in the back garden. When Christmas morning strikes, Bridget excitedly runs outside to try her new toy, only for Buster to beat her to it…

We have to say though, we do miss that eyes-welling-up moment that we got with previous years' adverts...
