The YouGov Survey has revealed that most people think the correct way to pronounce the cake is to rhyme with 'gone', rather than 'cone'.

Research reveals that 51% of Brits pronounce it to rhyme with 'gone', while 42% rhyme it with 'cone'.

And according to the survey, the first most influential factor in pronunciation is region.

Midlands residents (56%) and London livers (50%) are more likely to pronounce it 'cone', whilst those from the North (60%) and Scottish residents (80%) are much more likely to rhyme it with 'gone'.

The second most influential factor is social grade. Only 26% of those in the working class category use the 'gone' prounciation, whilst 55% of people in the middle class social category prefer this pronunciation.

So although the margin isn't huge, it seems like we have a winner with 'gone'!
